Art Gallery in Tequesta to host Canstruction exhibit

Canstruction is a unique food charity that hosts design/build competitions. Teams of architects, engineers, and students mentored by these professionals, compete to design and build giant structures made entirely from full cans of food. It takes 8-12 weeks and thousands of cans of food to create each structure.

The results are displayed to the public as magnificent sculpture exhibits in each city where a competition is held. The public is invited to donate canned food at the time of the exhibition. At the close of the exhibitions, all of the canned food used in the structures is donated to local food banks for distribution to emergency feeding programs that include pantries, soup kitchens, elderly and day care centers.

If you are in Tequesta, stop by the Lighthouse Gallery for the Arts.

Shaq sells Miami mansion but takes a $ 2 million loss

After four years on the market, Shaquille O’Neal finally sold his Miami Beach mansion.

Word is out that his home closed this week for $16 million after first listing it for $32 million. It’s a humbling sale: Shaq bought the nearly 20,000-square-foot home on Star Island, in Biscayne Bay, for $18.8 million in 2004.

The Mediterranean-style home on 2.5 acres has seven bedrooms, eight bathrooms, an indoor basketball court, gym, a pool and sauna. The property also has a two-bedroom guest house, a tennis court, a dock and a six-car garage. The home, built in 1992 by Miami Heat center Rony Seikaly, was last listed for $22.5 million.

If you saw the show on Discovery called Million Dollar Agents, you will remember "The Jills", a Coldwell Banker team. They were the listing agents on the deal.

OK, so it was a really, really big house on an exclusive island in Biscayne Bay. Did it have a waterfront view?
You decide?

Does South Florida look like a great place to live?  YOU BET IT IS!  If you are looking for a home in this area, let me show you the best values and locations.  Unlike many agents, I have lived here 21 years and can show you all homes for sale listed by all brokers.  Contact me at rsites@bellsouth.net or on Skype at rsites.

Jupiter thunderstorms

Now this is a line of thunderstoms!
These storms were supposed to get here yesterday but didn't make it. WOW it's here now. I'm sitting on the back porch and the sky has turned to gold/green, the way it always does when these monster storms roll through.
Looking at the map, Jupiter sits right on the county line that comes out of the east side of Lake Okeechobee and where it meets the Atlantic Ocean.

Roger Dean Stadium in Abacoa Jupiter Florida

Abacoa is a planned community on the south side of Jupiter built with the idea that you could live, work and play all in one spot around a central core of specialty shops, theaters, restaurants and the Roger Dean Stadium.

For years the dominant stadium was in West Palm Beach where the Atlanta Braves and the Montreal Expos had spring training. When the Braves moved, Roger Dean Stadium opened and is home to the Florida Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals spring training.  Its always exciting to be so close to the action and I've been fortunate to see some of the game's greats play here including Cal Ripken and Mark McGuire.

In the spring, our weather is perfect for an afternoon ball game at the stadium.  Or if baseball is not your thing, the Abacoa Golf Club is across the street and offers a challenging venue.

If you are looking at Abacoa homes for sale, there are 15 communities here and they offer everything from million dollar homes in Valencia to live/work condos in Antigua.  You can see all Jupiter home for sale by visiting Coastal Florida Real Estate or by contacting me at coastalflrealestate@gmail.com.

Jupiter Farms home prices dip below the mark of $ 150,000

Even if the home is not perfect, Jupiter Farms is still only 15 minutes from the only strectch of free public beaches in the county, the Jupiter Inlet with access to the fabulous fishing in the Atlantic, and the famous Loxahatchee River.

Willie Gary fails to pay taxes in Stuart

TCPalm.com reported that Willie "The Giant Killer" Gary, famed Stuart trial attorney failed to pay his property taxes. According to their website:

“Right now, we’re just kind of sitting on the dollars,” Gary said about his $239,196 in unpaid taxes on five properties he owns with his wife Gloria, including his law office in downtown Stuart.
“I’m going to pay my taxes, but strategy wise, and specifically with the economy being the way it is, the money that you do have, you’ve just got to hold onto it right now,” Gary said. “Timing could be everything. Timing could save money. Timing could be a good investment.”
Gary and several well-known developers helped Martin County set a new record for delinquent tax bills this year with 4,718 properties in arrears as of the April 1 deadline, county records show. That’s an increase of nearly 13 percent from last year and an 83 percent increase from 2005.
The increase in delinquent property tax payments in Martin County is another indication of the worsening recession, said Tax Collector Ruth Pietruszewski.
“Because of the economic conditions, you had more people that had a problem,” Pietruszewski said.
And more investors took advantage of the opportunity to earn up to 18 percent interest on the tax payments they made on behalf of the property owners who didn’t pay by the April 1 deadline, Pietruszewski said.
Investors paid all but $30,938 of Martin County’s delinquent property taxes during the June 1 auction of tax certificates, Pietruszewski said. The average interest rate the property owners must pay to the certificate purchasers who paid their debts for them was 13 percent.
The certificates were popular because they offered a better return than savings accounts at banks and a safer investment than the stock market. Pietruszewski said.
“We had several brand-new bidders and they said they weren’t getting any interest from the bank and they were afraid of the stock market, so they were going to try this now,” Pietruszewski said.
Gary was in good company on the list of people who failed to pay their taxes by the April 1 deadline.
Joining him were the developers of the controversial Renar River Place and Pitchford’s Landing subdivisions in Jensen Beach.

Sea Turtles Nesting Season- Jupiter, Tequesta & Stuart

The following article is from the local newspaper at tcpalm.com.

Leatherbacks are an endangered species, but this year the turtles might lay a record number of nests on Treasure Coast beaches and on beaches around Florida.
“By all appearances,” said Bob Ernest, president of Jensen Beach-based Ecological Associates, “2009 is going to shatter the state’s record for leatherback nests.”
Sea turtle nesting season in Florida officially runs from March 1 through Oct. 31. Leatherbacks arrive first, and their nesting season is now winding down; loggerheads, a threatened species that’s the most common sea turtle on the Treasure Coast, are about halfway through their nesting season; and green turtles, also an endangered species, began nesting this month.
Ecological Associates monitors turtle nests on Hutchinson Island from Normandy Beach in St. Lucie County south to the St. Lucie Inlet and from the Fort Pierce Inlet south to the Ocean Village condominiums in the South Beach area of Fort Pierce. Through Wednesday, the firm has tallied 304 leatherback nests; in the same time frame on the same beaches, 230 nests were counted in 2007, the previous record-setting year.
Other turtle watchers on the Treasure Coast are reporting similar, if not quite as spectacular, results.
“So far this year, leatherback nesting has been really good,” said Rick Herren, who oversees Indian River County’s sea turtle habitat conservation plan and monitors about 75 percent of the county’s turtle nesting beaches.
Herren said the sections of beach he monitors had 33 leatherback nests as of June 11; the record is 46 nests for the same time period in 2007.
Meghan Koperski of the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission’s office in Tequesta, which oversees turtle watch activities throughout the Treasure Coast, calls the turtle-nesting season so far “kind of a mixed bag.”
“Some areas are reporting fewer leatherbacks than in years before,” Koperski said, “and some are reporting record numbers of leatherbacks.”
That’s the good news. The not-so-good news is that the number of nests of loggerhead turtles appears to be on the decline.
“We’re about 200 nests below where we were at this time last year,” Herren said of loggerheads in Indian River County, “and about 50 nests below where we were in 2007, our worst year on record.”
Ernest said the number of loggerhead nests his crews have found “appears to be declining. But we’re not quite halfway through the loggerhead season, so it’s hard to make an accurate assessment.”
With the green turtle nesting season just under way, the experts say it’s too early to predict numbers for the year.
Experts also are hesitant to hypothesize about why leatherback numbers are up and loggerheads are down.
Because sea turtles take decades to reach breeding age, Herren said, “there could be something that happened years ago, either in the turtles’ foraging grounds or on their way to our beaches, that’s caused there to be fewer nesting (loggerheads).”
The uptick in leatherbacks, a species that ranges farther out to sea, could be the result of recently enacted turtle-friendly fishing practices, including nets that have escape hatches.
“The (nesting) season isn’t over until it’s over,” Koperski added. “As soon as anyone starts making predictions, (the turtles) prove them wrong.”

Olivia Newton-John-Jupiter Inlet Colony

According to the Palm Beach Post:

Olivia Newton-John and JohnEasterling earlier this month signed on the dotted line, and wrote a check for $4.1 million without needing a mortgage broker, for a property in the tiny community in the shadow of the famous Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse.

According to property records, the couple’s 1997 Intracoastal home covers about 7,000 square feet, with four bedrooms and four bathrooms, and a dock.

They bought from the town’s third-term mayor, John Zuccarelli.

“As the mayor, we’re very happy to have them,” Zuccarelli said. “Everyone who’s met them, including the neighbors, has been impressed with how nice they are. We welcome them with open arms.”

The Aussie actress and Easterling, a modern day adventurer, were hitched on the beach in Jupiter last year, and have been searching high and low of their dream home while staying in Easterling’s cramped home in Tequesta.

“I always made sure this house was a little different from the rest,” Zuccarelli said. “I made it comfortable without making it look ostentatious. It’s a wide open floor plan that’s dog friendly. It’s got a tin roof and with the blue color on the outside, it looks a lot like a Key West home.”

And Hizzoner, 55, made a couple of bucks, too. He bought the place in 1995 for $730,000 and had it rebuilt.

Newton-John joins other celebs within a two-mile radius, including Nashville stars Alan Jackson. Deceased country icon Tammy Wynette and the passed-on crooner Perry Como lived nearby and, until recently, so did former New York Gov. George Pataki.

And a little further north on Jupiter Island, Tiger Woods is building his compound (I hear his mother is assembling a compound in Jupiter) and Greg Norman still has his home on the market...but it has been marked down to $ 47.5 million.

Jupiter & Juno Beach

MEMORIAL DAY...WHERE'S THE CROWD?

Here in Jupiter and Juno Beach we are blessed with miles of pristine beaches with no crowds. Isn't the beach supposed to be shoulder to shoulder on Memorial Day?

Jupiter's 5 miles of beaches are "dog friendly". At each walkover, the Friends of Jupiter Beach have installed boxes with supplies to keep the beach clean and somehow the dogs all seem to know that the beach doesn't belong to any one dog and they all get along, tails wagging and they chase balls and bark at the waves.

This is the only strectch of free beaches like this along the southeast coast except for county parks. To find out more about the Jupiter and Coastal Florida Real Estate market contact me at: http://www.coastalfloridarealestate.net/.

Old Palm Golf Club-Palm Beach Gardens

Old Palm Golf Club is Raymond Floyd's signature community in Palm Beach Gardens. Palm Beach Gardens has become the epicenter for the upscale golf community with Mirasol, BallenIsles, Frenchman's Reserve, Frenchman's Creek, Old Marsh and Lost Tree Village (techincally North Palm Beach) all within just a couple of miles.

Old Palm though shares more with Lost Tree, The Medalist and The Loxahatchee Club since there are no tee times, professional caddies, and the ability to walk the course. Most of today's club enforce a strict pace of play policy requiring players to complete their round in 4 hours.

Old Palm has 294 residences, a 43,000 square foot clubhouse with every conceivable amenity including a full time concierge, much like the Ritz Carlton in nearby Jupiter.

An interesting aspect of the course if the Scottish tradition of a 19th hole "bye hole" where golfers can settle friendly wagers.

Jupiter Island Beachfront Condos recent sale

RECENT SALE OF BEACHFRONT CONDO ON JUPITER ISLAND

Can you believe this was shot on Jupiter Island, right down the street from Tiger Woods' new compound? The beaches on Jupiter Island are some of the most pristine around since there is such limited access. And the water is nearly as clear as the Bahamas. This location is behind the Passages condominiums.

A unit in The Passages just sold for $ 1,360,000 after being listed at $ 1,395,000. Take a look at the picture below to see the Island location.  You are looking from west to east across the Intracoastal Waterway to the Atlantic Ocean.

Jupiter Island condos offer residents the same lifestyle as those that live up in the estates.  Alan Jackson lives right up the street but has not better view, just more house and property to take care of.

Jupiter Country Club, a Toll Brothers community

Jupiter Country Club is a Toll Brothers community on the western side of the Town of Jupiter. Located near the Florida Turnpike and I-95, the community is built on the typical TB theme of a golf course being the main anchor. In this case, Greg Norman (also a Jupiter Island resident until his $ 47.5 million dollar home sells) designed the course. I think he has done others for Toll Brothers Country Clubs.
Anyone visiting Frenchman's Reserve in Palm Beach Gardens and the Jupiter Country Club will immediately see the similarities.  The golf course has 15 holes on the south side of Indiantown Road then you pass through a tunnel to reach the other 3 and the driving range.
On the west side of the development is Palm Beach County's Riverbend Park. You can find out more about this 750 acre park by visiting other posts on this blog. Unfortunately for TB, Jupiter Country Club came online right at the top of the market. Fortunately for buyers, there are great deals out there.
